Unemployment Rates Fall in Northeast Kansas
Unemployment rates fell throughout most of Northeast Kansas last month. Marshall County had an unemployment rate of 3.6%, Washington County was at 3.3%, Nemaha County was at 3.0%, Riley County was at 3.9%, and Pottawatomie County was at 4.3%. Statewide the jobless rate fell below 6% for the first time since December 2008 at 5.9%, down from 6.2% in August. Read More »
New Tire & Mechanical Shop Set to Open in Washington
There’s a new tire repair shop and mechanical service center going up on Highway 15 in Washington. It’s expected to open in early November, according to owner Gary Stone. It will be called Stone’s Southside Service. He’ll incorporate his towing business into the building. Read More »

Firefighters Battle Grass Fire in Jefferson County
Jefferson County Firefighters battled a grass fire Tuesday afternoon about 10 miles southeast of Fairbury that burned nearly 80 acres of prairie grass. The fire was caused by a Rotary Mower as it struck a rock or something that caused a spark. High winds added to the challenge of putting the fire out. Read More »

Registered voters may now vote an advance ballot for the Nov. 6 General Election, either by mail or in person at the County Clerk’s office.
