Author Archives: Derek Nester

Derek Nester was born and raised in Blue Rapids, and graduated from Valley Heights High School in May of 2000. He attended Cowley College in Arkansas City and Johnson County Community College in Overland Park studying Journalism & Media Communication. After stops at KFRM and KCLY radio in Clay Center, he joined KNDY in 2002 as a board operator and play by play announcer. Derek is now responsible for the digital content of Dierking Communications, Inc. 6 radio stations. In 2005 Derek joined the staff of KCFX radio in Kansas City as a production assistant for the Kansas City Chiefs Radio Network, which airs on 69 radio stations across 9 Midwest states.

Big Blue River Bridge at Blue Rapids Imploded Wednesday (Video)

Highway 77 over the Big Blue River near Blue Rapids was closed for a short time Wednesday afternoon while the old bridge structure was imploded.  The new bridge over the Big Blue opened about 3 weeks ago just south of the old bridge.  The entire project should be finished by late December. Voter Turnout Higher Than Expected Tuesday

Voter turnout in Tuesday’s General Election was a little higher than normal around the area.  Marshall and Nemaha County both reported that voter turnout was 67-68%, about average, while Washington and Gage County both reported a little higher than normal, with Washington County reporting 71% voter turnout and Gage County with 68%. Blue Springs Brawl Sends 2 To Beatrice Hospital

Gage County Sheriff’s Deputies along with Wymore and Beatrice Rescue workers were called to a 5 person brawl in Blue Springs early Sunday morning. Ambulances transported 23 year old Holly Mick of Wymore and 23 year old Adrian Hourigan of Axtell to Beatrice Community Hospital for injuries sustained from the fight.
