USD 113 To Close Summerfield School; Sell Properties

USD 113 Prairie Hills School District continues to explore options for budget reductions. At the March 10 meeting, a unanimous vote to close the Summerfield School, with students to attend Axtell was approved. This year Summerfield hosts Pre-K through 4th grade, with Axtell hosting 5th – 12th grades. Relocation of the Summerfield students has been discussed for a number of years. Rooms at the Axtell School will be reconfigured to accommodate the change.

Summerfield enrollment is currently 68, Axtell with 105 students. The district plans to sell the Summerfield School, and will address that next fall. The Bern School, which closed at the end of the 2011-12 school year, is also being sold. Board members recently approved listing the facility with realtors, with a beginning selling price of $200,000. That number could be adjusted once realtors tour the building.

A nearly three hour executive session to discuss budget options, and specifically potential staff reductions was held Monday. No actions were taken. Bill Orth, Superintendent of USD 113 will be a guest on our Public Affairs Program this weekend, airing Saturday morning at 7:10 a.m. on KNDY AM 1570/FM 94.1.
