Detour Alternatives Discussed Regarding US 77 Bridge Replacement

Alternatives to a proposed 30 mile detour for up to six months on US Highway 77 a mile north of the Marshall County line are being considered. County Commissioners Monday viewed the site, meeting with some 20 residents. A petition requesting a shoofly is posted at area convenience stores, public works, and the County Courthouse. Work is set to begin mid-September on the $1.3 million reconstruction of the 140’ bridge. The Kansas Department of Transportation estimates that a shoofly would add a $700,000 expense. The proposed detour would route traffic through Frankfort to the east, or Clay Center to the west. An option of constructing the new bridge adjacent to, while keeping the old bridge open during construction, is also being considered. Local residents expressed concern that township roads would see a considerable increase in traffic if a detour is posted, resulting in damage and safety.
