Beatrice City Council Monday voted unanimously to add a half percent sales tax to the May 13 ballot. Earmarked for street improvements, the proposal would bring the local sales tax to a total of 2%. An interlocal agreement with Gage County was also adopted, whereby if the increase passes, up to 5% of the funds would be used for improvement of 33rd Street between Lincoln and U.S. Highway 136. Fourteen projects are targeted for street repair, and the tax would generate an estimated $660,000 annually, going into effect in 2015. Street department revenue has been around $2 million annually in recent years.
