Meeting In Wetmore Discusses ‘Kansas Whiteway’ Byway

A meeting was to be held Tuesday in Wetmore with Kansas Department of Transportation representatives, and area legislators to answer questions regarding the steps needed to create a byway for the Kansas Whiteway, along highway 9, which paralleled the Central Branch Railroad from Atchison to Beloit, where it merged with Highway 24. The route eventually linked Chicago to Colorado Springs, and was known as the Great Whiteway for its distinctive marking of two black bars bordering a white center, which were painted on roadside poles. Activities are being planned to mark the 100th anniversary of an organizational meeting to create the road, including a car run may 10.
