Gage County is considering outsourcing prisoners to jail facilities in neighboring counties. That discussion followed budget request increases on top of $120,000 annually which was previously set aside for improvements to the jail in Beatrice. Gage County voters rejected a new 85 bed, $11.4 million dollar facility in 2009. That proposal was prompted by a report from the Nebraska Fire Marshalls office noting some 25 deficiencies in the current facility. A number of improvements have been made in the interim. County officials are in the process of examining costs associated with various options.
