Hail causes accident that sends 8 to the hospital

Hail was the cause of an accident in North Central Kansas that sent 8 people, including 6 students from Clifton-Clyde High School to the hospital Wednesday.

The accident happened 5 miles east of Russell on Interstate 70. The Kansas Highway Patrol reports says that Laura Kay Stunkel, age 29 of Palmer, was driving the school SUV when she drove over some hail and lost control, sliding across the median. Stunkel struck a vehicle being driven by Melinda Smith of Shawnee. All 8 of them were taken to the hospital in Russell with unknown injuries. Students in the SUV were Kegan Hubert, age 18, Jonathan Douley, age 18, Autumn Sorell, age 15, Linney Haas, age 15, Dorian Girard, age 16, and Tsai Yichi, age 16. All are from Clifton and all occupants were wearing their seat belts.
