National Weather Service Spotter Training Talks Scheduled

Every year, the National Weather Service in Topeka presents spotter talks which are open to the general public. Presentations are typically 1-1.5 hours long, and are given by a meteorologist from The National Weather Service office. Spotter training will focus on storm structure and accurate identification of important cloud features associated with supercell thunderstorms.

While attending a talk the National Weather Service will provide you with contact information. They encourage everyone to call the NWS once you are safe to pass along critical information about any severe weather you experienced. They may also call you at your home and ask you about ongoing weather in your area or after the severe weather has passed to inquire about possible damage or hail size.

In addition, this year the NWS will provide supplemental on-line spotter training. This training is focused on the basics of convective weather and storm structure. They strongly encourage all county spotters and others who are interested in becoming spotters to complete this training as an introduction into basic spotting concepts. This training takes around one hour can be accessed at:

We also have a new and improved storm spotter reference guide for download.

Below you will find a table of scheduled talks for 2013 in the NWS Topeka coverage area, which includes northeast, east central and north central Kansas. If you are interested in attending a talk for your area, please see the table below for locations and dates. This schedule will continue to be updated so if you do not see a talk scheduled in your area yet, please be patient. We appreciate your interest!
