Centralia schools honored the Riggins family, Eugene, Mildred, Frank, John, and Bill Friday night by dedicating the field and naming it “Riggins Field.” Frank, John, and Bill were on hand for the ceremony prior to the game with Troy. Centralia Athletic Director Larry Glatczak said the ceremony included the entire Centralia and Troy teams lining up on both sides of Riggins Field as the presentation was made. He said it was a really neat ceremony and something the kids will remember for a long time.
John and Bill Riggins both went on to play football at the University of Kansas. John was drafted by the New York Jets in the first round of the 1971 draft and then in 1975 signed as a free agent with the Washington Redskins, where he was part of Super Bowl 17 and named the game’s MVP as the Redskins beat the Miami Dolphins 27-17. He was inducted the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, OH in 1992 and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
