Gage County Emergency Management is participating in Nebraska’s State Weather Awareness week. The State of Nebraska is holding a tornado safety drill Wednesday. A morning drill will begin at 10 a.m. with a mock tornado warning and activation of the outdoor warning sirens. A second warning may be issued around 7 p.m. Gage County Emergency Management Director Mark Meints said the destruction caused by tornadoes last year shows that people need to be prepared. In 2011 there was almost 1,700 confirmed tornadoes and 552 confirmed fatalities.
Meints said emergency management said they will be making changes in storm spotter policies. The Nebraska Legislature has written bill LB573 which says storm spotters now have to be credentialed.
