Standoff Causes School Lockdown in Beatrice

A standoff with a man in Beatrice on Wednesday led to the lockdown of Paddock Lane Elementary School. Police were called to 1721 N. 15th Street in Beatrice at 11:53 a.m. after a woman called 911 and reported her husband, identified as Michael Haney, was threatening her while holding a gun.

Officers arrived at the home and attempted to contact Haney by telephone, but were unsuccessful. At approximately 1:15 p.m., the police mobile command unit and SWAT team arrived on scene. Police finally made contact Haney. At 1:45 p.m. Haney surrendered to police.

No shots were fired during the incident. Police did confiscate four rifles found in the home.

During the standoff Paddock Lane Elementary was placed into lockdown. School was scheduled to release student at 1:30 p.m. Police officers were stationed near the school and students were only allowed to leave if they were accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Haney was charged with making terroristic threats, a felony, and domestic assault, a misdemeanor. He was lodged in the Gage County Detention Center.
