Concerned citizens filled the Bern Attendance Center Monday evening to listen and discuss a proposal to close the Bern school. The crowd included students, parents, business owners, community leaders and residents of the Bern area.
The Prairie Hills USD 113 Board of Education has proposed closing both the Bern and Summerfield Schools to improve the financial situation of the district. Board Members explained to the crowd that enrollment numbers, finances and aging buildings were some of the reasons for considering the closure.
During the meeting over 20 people addressed the board – all were in opposition of the school closing.
According the meeting agenda the board will meet use the information and opinions received from the public to make a decision on the closure of the school.
