Frankfort Boys Memorial Highway Bill Moves Forward

The proposed, “Frankfort Boys World War II Memorial Highway”, has moved one step closer to reality.  The memorial was the idea of former Frankfort area citizen and veteran Frank Benteman.  Benteman is a veteran of World War II.  Two of his brothers also served in Germany during the war.

Benteman testified before the Kansas House Transportation Committee Tuesday in support of the bill sponsored by Representative Sharon Swartz.  After his testimony the 19 committee members and guests gave Benteman a standing ovation for his testimony and service.

Later on Tuesday the Kansas house Transportation Committee approved the bill, moving it forward to the Kansas House for debate.  If approved by the Kansas House and Senate the bill would rename a stretch of highway K99 from Frankfort to Highway 36 the, “Frankfort Boys World War II Memorial Highway.

Official records have confirmed Thirty-seven men from the town of Frankfort were killed in World War II, more than any other town its size in Kansas.  Benteman believes there are still undeclared deaths and the number is likely over 40.
