Dry conditions contributed to a fire southeast of Beatrice near 10th and Lilac Roads on Wednesday afternoon. The fire was caused by a combine’s overheated manifold. A strong wind from the south pushed the fire toward the Big Blue River. The area burned contained corn, beans and alfalfa.
Firemen created a staging area on fire’s western flank on South 10th Road. From there they monitored the fire’s progress and refilled the water tanks of grass fire units fighting the blaze. Fire departments from Filley, Wymore, Beatrice, Blue Springs and Pickrell used modified pickup trucks to fight the fire. Firefighters were also aided by area farmers who brought equipment to create dirt barriers to contain the fire.
