Dry Weather Poses Fire Problems

The dry weather conditions were a factor in a field fire three miles north of Barneston on Tuesday. The cause of the fire is unknown but a member of the fire department said the grass was dry enough a cigarette could have started the fire. Barneston, Wymore and Blue Springs fire departments worked for approximately two hours to extinquish the fire which occurred in a field along South 180th Road. The field is owned by Terry Penke of Omaha and leased to Mike Braun of Wymore. According to fire officials the fire burned approximately 25 acres. No crops or structures were damaged.

In the last week several other grass or field fires have been reported. On Thursday the Hanover Fire Department was dispatched to Franklin Township Section 28 for a pasture fire. On Friday the Washington Fire Department was dispatched to the 1400 block of 17th Road for a ditch fire.  Also on Friday the Linn and Palmer Fire Departments were dispatched west of 1479 7th Road for a bean field on fire.
