Bremen Citizens are fighting to save their post office which has been designated by the Kansas Postmaster as an office that is subject to closing. Gary Holle, Bremen Insurance is spearheading the effort to keep the Bremen Post Office Open. An organizational meeting will take place 7 P.M. Tuesday evening at the Bremen Insurance Office. The Postal Service has agreed to meet with the citizens of Bremen on Wednesday, November 2nd, at 6 P.M. The meeting will take place at the Bremen Insurance Building.
Holle said they intend to present a petition signed by over 150 are residents to the Post Office Representative at the meeting. According to Holle the petition asks for the Bremen Post Office to remain open and to continue offering the same services as it offers now.
Holle said that one issue is the Postal Service will not factor in the postage from Bremen Insurance because they use an automated postage system that weighs and stamps the mail. According to Holle this amounts to over $70,000 in postage that the Postal Service refuses to credit to the local post office. Holle is also concerned that Bremen Insurance and others will have to make daily trips to another Post Office to drop off mail. In addition anyone renting one of the 150 Post Office boxes will be required to either install a rural approved mailbox or travel to Hanover or Marysville to rent a box.
