Washington County Commissioners’ Approve Budget

COMMISSION MINUTES, August 29, 2011

The Board of Washington County Commission met in regular session on Monday, August 29, 2011 in the commission room at the Washington County Courthouse. Present: Alison Mueller, 1st District Commissioner; Roger Otott, 2nd District Commissioner, Chairman; Gene Helms, 3rd District Commissioner, and Lou Kern, County Clerk. Elizabeth Hiltgen, County Attorney, was absent due to trial matters.

Chairman Otott called the meeting to order.

County offices will be closed on Monday, September 5, to observe Labor Day.

The next regular meeting will be Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 8:30 A.M.

At 9:00 A.M. Chairman Otott opened the floor for comments on the 2012 budget. No appearances were noted. Alison Mueller moved to accept the 2012 county budget as printed. Gene Helms seconded and motion carried. Alison Mueller moved to adopt Resolution 05-11expressing the property taxation policy of the Board of Washington County Commissioners with respect to financing the 2012 annual budget. Gene Helms seconded and motion carried.

Delmar Koeneke stopped by to visit.

Duane Bruna, Noxious Weed and Solid Waste Director, gave work report. Loren Mueller has asked to work less days. Larry Leck thanked the commission for all the considerations he received from the county and announced that his last day at work is September 6.

Gloria Moore, Tourism Director, reported that the mini-trade show in Maryland Heights, Missouri was well attended. Various cities have requested financial help with State permit costs for signage that was paid from the transient guest tax budget. The Governor’s Summit on Animal Ag in Garden City is September 28th. Our Daily Bread has been requested to serve their cinnamon rolls at the morning meeting. Transient guest tax income is down by half from last year.

 

Dan Thalmann visited with the board about preparations for the upcoming Rotary and Veterans’ Memorial at the airport on September 11 at 4:00 P.M. It looks as though a fly over may be possible. Tables will be set up in an airport hangar to display memorabilia that persons may wish to display. 300 meals will be served following dedication.

David Willbrant, Public Works Administrator, gave weekly work report. Results from the bridge tour taken last week were discussed. Alison Mueller moved and Gene Helms seconded to sign the Kansas Department of Transportation Local Off-System Bridge Program paperwork for a project 1.6 miles west and 2.5 miles south of Palmer. Motion carried.

The board recessed at 12:10 P.M. and reconvened at 1:00 P.M.

Sheriff Bill Dickson reported on jail matters. The board approved and Chairman Otott signed payroll change notice for Under Sheriff Wes Weber for completion of training period.

The board approved and Chairman Otott signed payroll change notice for Monica Speakman due to increase in hours, effective August 29, 2011.

Christy L’Ecuyer, Business Coordinator, gave weekly update on meetings attended.

The board adjourned at 2:30 P.M.
