Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday for the trial for Stephen Macomber, a Topeka man charged in the attempted murder of a Marshall County Sheriff‘s deputy.
In March, Macomber pleaded ” not guilty” to nine counts in Marshall County District Court. The charges, including attempted first-degree murder, were filed in connection with the shooting of Marshall County Deputy Fernando Salcedo and alleged kidnapping of Blue Rapids resident Hedy Saville.
Macomber allegedly shot Salcedo during a traffic stop in Blue Rapids on June 7th of last year. Following the shooting, he allegedly took Saville hostage, which led to a four hour stand-off with law enforcement officers.
A separate jury trial for the alleged kidnapping is scheduled to begin June 6th.
Macomber was also charged in Shawnee County for the alleged murder of Topeka resident Ryan Lofton, which also occurred on June 7th. A jury trial is scheduled in Shawnee County for August 1st.
Macomber was also charged in federal court for the alleged robbery of a bank in Bellevue, Nebraska.
