Wymore Recall Election Set for May 10th

Wymore City Council voted to set a date for a vote on the recall of Councilmember Dan Hawkins. May 10th the citizens in Ward 1 will vote to either recall Hawkins or continue to allow him to represent them. The recall attempt was started by a Wymore Citizen Lee Carr after Hawkins left 5 consecutive council meetings effectively ending the meeting.

Hawkins said he left the meetings to protest Wymore Mayor Dan Guenther’s failure to consider all qualified persons for a council seat left open after Guenther was elected mayor. Guenther had nominated Beth Cordry Hookstra as his selection for the seat at each of the five meetings. The council seat was eventually filled after Guenther presented a new name for appointment saying Cordry Hookstra had withdrawn her name. Guenther nominated Sue Sapp for the vacant council seat. Sapp was approved with Hawkins voting for Sapp’s appointment.

Carr had received the needed number of signatures from the Ward Hawkins represents and said that he would continue with the recall process because of the support for the recall. Carr said he believed the citizens of Ward 1 should make a clear decision on their representative.
