Local Boy Scouts assisted in the rescue of a small girl who wandered off at the Alcove Spring park. The scouts were part of an emergency management drill coordinated between the Marshall County Fire Department, Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Marshall County Emergency Management and the leaders of Boy Scout Troop 180. The scouts were unaware the rescue was a drill until after they located, treated and transported the victim out of a wooded area near the park entrance.
Bill Schwinndaman, Marshall County Emergency Management Director, said the scouts performed very well. He said the scouts were matched with adults and then assigned to specific search areas. According to Schinndaman one benefit of having the scouts help was their energy level.
Buster Schmitz, Boy Scout Troop 180, was very pleased with the scouts performance. Schmitz’s daughter was the injured victim in the drill. He said the scouts were focused on finding, providing medical aid and carrying the little girl out on a homemade stretcher, they didn’t realize who it was they were carrying.
