Minge named K-State Research and Extension Office Professional of the Year

Ruthann Minge, Office Professional for the River Valley Extension District Washington Office was awarded the 2010 K-State Research and Extension County/District Office Professional of the Year at the KSRE Awards Luncheon held October 19 in Manhattan.

Minge began her career with K-State in 1971, working on campus until 1974.  From 1974 through the present she has been the office professional for the Washington County Extension and now the River Valley Extension District. Over the years Minge has exemplified the criteria for the award; quality of work, productivity, initiative, creativity, adaptability, teamwork, cooperation, and service.

For 39 years she has displayed dedication to K-State and has provided continuity through changes in agents as well as in Extension structure.  She regularly is seen in purple as well as K-State or River Valley Extension apparel.  She is always willing to do whatever is needed for the educational programs of the River Valley Extension District.

The term enthusiastic understates Minge’s approach to customer service.  Each caller gets the complete and accurate K-State Research and Extension phone greeting as well as good wishes for the appropriate part of the day or holiday season.  She takes pride in helping people, no matter what the issue.  She takes time to visit with each person, letting them know she cares what is going on in their lives.  No stop to the Extension office is complete without a piece of chocolate or other candy for the road.

As part of the River Valley Extension team she is responsible for the River Valley District Extension Newsletter as well as the River Valley 4-H Newsletter.  This past year she displayed great dedication, adaptability, teamwork and cooperation as she, along with 4-H Program Assistant Linda Nutsch, worked to cover the needs of the office when a retirement and a move left the office with no agents.  Minge went above and beyond by cleaning, painting, repairing, and moving in preparation for two new agents.  She rolled up her sleeves and went to work when heavy rains resulted in flooding of the office in June, helping to minimize potential damage all while working to make a very stressful situation as pleasant as possible.

Minge now joins the list of River Valley Extension Office Professionals having won KSRE Awards.  Frieda Knitter, Clay Center, was the 2006 Classified Employee of the Year, and Kim Kolman, Belleville, was the 2009 KSRE County/District Office Professional of the Year.  Minge was joined at the awards luncheon by husband Dennis; office professionals Knitter, Kolman and Mary Florea, Concordia; and extension agents Gina Aurand, David Coltrain, John Forshee, Robin Slattery, Deanna Turner, and Todd Whitney.
