September is Suicide Prevention Month

This is Suicide Prevention Month in Kansas.  According to Pawnee Mental Health Director Robbin Cole, in the United States one person dies by suicide every 15 minutes.

Cole also states that 90 percent of people who commit suicide have a mental illness.  Most mental illnesses are treatable and suicide is preventable.  According to Cole people should learn to recognize danger signs that may indicate a person is considering suicide.  The next step is to contact help for that person.  For kids, Cole, says a counselor or teacher, for adults, possibly a pastor or family doctor.  The best source of help is a trained mental health professional.

Cole will be our guest on the KNDY Public Affairs program this weekend to go into depth on some of these items.  Pawness Mental Health Services is a licensed community mental health center and substance abuse treatment center serving more than 7,500 people annually throughout 10 counties in north central Kansas.  To contact Pawnee Mental Health you can call 785-587-4300.
