Accident in Gage County leads to death

On July 26, 2010, the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and Beatrice Rural Fire and Rescue responded to a single vehicle injury accident which occurred on East Lilac Road approximately a 1/4 mile west of South 1st Road.

A Black 1999 Chevrolet Blazer driven by 44 year old Thomas L. Erickson of Beatrice was driving westbound on East Lilac Road when he lost control of his vehicle.  The vehicle entered the south ditch on West Lilac Road and rolled onto the driver’s side.  The driver of the vehicle was transported to Beatrice Community Hospital by Beatrice Rural Fire and Rescue and was later transported to Bryan LGH West in Lincoln for his injures. The passenger in the vehicle, 45 year old Judy L. Schwarz of Beatrice, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The driver, Thomas Erickson, was placed under arrest by Sheriff’s deputies at the hospital and is being charged for Driving Under the Influence, Driving Under Suspension, and Motor Vehicle Homicide. Erickson is currently still in the custody of the Gage County Sheriff’s Office. 

Air bags were not deployed in the vehicle and seatbelts were not being utilized by either the driver or passenger.  Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident and the accident is still under investigation by the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and the Nebraska State Patrol.
