Beatrice rescue personnel responded to a possible drowning below the West Court Street bridge in Beatrice Wednesday evening. According to witnesses, Eric Pospichal, 23, was swimming near the dam when he was pulled underneath the water by the current. Witnesses said Pospichal was seen one more time and before submerging again. Two women swimming with Pospichal tried to locate but were unable to find him and called 911.
Beatrice Firefighters responded to the scene of a possible drowning at approximately 6:45 p.m. According to Fire chief Brian Daake Pospichal had disappeared underwater as much as 20 minutes before the emergency call was received. Emergency personnel patrolled the banks of the Big Blue River from the West Court bridge to the South Sixth bridge but found nothing. Firefighters from Blue Springs responded to patrol the shores at Holmesville.
The dive team arrived from Fairbury at approximately 8 p.m. but it was decided the water conditions were too dangerous to perform a search of the water Wednesday evening. Rescue workers remained stationed along the river throughout Wednesday night. As of 9:30 a.m. Thursday Pospichal was still missing.
