Law enforcement memorial service scheduled

The 28th Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony will be held Friday at 12 noon at the Law Enforcement monument, located on the northeast quadrant of the Statehouse grounds.
The ceremony comes a few days before National Police week, which is May 9th through the 15th, and in advance of National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, held on the 15th.
Kansas Highway Patrol Superintendent, Colonel Terry Maple, says National Police Week is a time to remember and celebrate the lives of fallen officers.
According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 116 US law enforcement officers lost their lives in the line of duty in 2009.
Kansas lost one officer, Sedgewick County Deputy Sheriff Brian Etheridge, who will be honored during this year’s ceremony. Etheridge died from wounds received while responding to a residence in Sedgewick County to take a larceny report last September.
