Southern Wymore School District loses $665,000

Southern Wymore School District’s First year Superintendent Less Hall is beginning his tenure at Southern with the task of finding $665,000 to cut from the district’s budget.  The original goal was to find the money without cutting staff positions.  Now, the Southern Board of Education voted 5-1 Monday evening to place the burden of eliminating staff positions on Hall and the administration.

According to Hall the district currently operates under an approximate $5.4 million budget, with approximately $1 million of the budget arriving in the form of state aid. The District learned early in March about a $665,000 reduction in state aid for the 2010-2011 school year.

Southern’s enrollment has dropped by 105 students over the last five years. The district began this school year with 393 students, but has since seen a small increase of students to approximately 420.

More than 50 district patrons, parents and students attended the School Board’s Monday meeting.  Many were there to voice their concern for possible cuts to the music department staff.

Hall said for now the district is waiting to see if more teachers accept early retirement incentives by Thursday to eliminate some positions through attrition.  Hall said he hopes to know more on the direction they will take as soon as Friday.
