Beatrice man attempts suicide while in jail

A Beatrice resident attempted to commit suicide in the Gage County Jail on Monday.  Staff members of the Gage County Detention Center found inmate Joshua Lopez, a 27-year-old Beatrice resident, attempting to commit suicide by hanging himself in his cell.  Lopez had been arrested a short time earlier by the Beatrice Police Department for Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person and for several outstanding warrants.  During the booking process, Lopez informed corrections staff that he wanted to commit suicide and then became uncooperative with the booking process.  Following policy, corrections staff required Lopez to dress in a smock specially designed to reduce the possibility of self harm and locked him in a cell where he could be checked on frequently.  During one of the frequent checks, Lopez was found in his cell unresponsive but with a strong heartbeat and regular respirations.  Lopez had torn the smock apart, wrapped part of it around the door handle, draped the other part across his neck, and leaned forward trying to choke himself.  Beatrice Fire and Rescue was called to the Detention Center and transported Lopez to Beatrice Community Hospital and Health Center where he was examined and medically cleared by emergency department staff.  Lopez was then transported to the Diagnostic and Evaluation Center in Lincoln.
