Public meetings scheduled to discuss Axtell-Sabetha consolidation

Two community information meetings have been set on the consolidation agreement between the Axtell and Sabetha School Districts.
They will be Tuesday, May 11th at the Sabetha Middle School and Wednesday, May 12th at the St. James Church Hall in Wetmore.
Both meetings will be at 7 p.m. and are open to the public.
The Kansas State Board of Education on April 14th gave approval for the consolidation proposal to proceed to a public election.
Voters in the Axtell and Sabetha School Districts will go to the polls during a special election on Tuesday, May 25th to decide whether the two districts should consolidate.
For the consolidation to take place, a majority of voters in each district would have to approve.
If voters approve the consolidation agreement, it would take effect July 1st, and the State Board of Education would assigned a new number to the consolidated district.
Voters in four counties will be involved—Nemaha, Marshall, Brown and Jackson.
Jackson County voters will cast their ballots in Wetmore in Nemaha County.
The voter registration deadline is May 10th, and people who want to vote in advance of election day can contact the county clerk’s office in their home county for information on obtaining an application.
