The unification of USD 488 Axtell, Bern, Summerfield and USD 441 Sabetha-Wetmore school districts came one step closer to fulfillment on Wednesday when the Kansas State Board of Education easily approved the request at their regular meeting in Topeka.
Superintendents at both districts said plans to consolidate began several years ago, but the recent economic downturn and cuts in state funding forced them to act more quickly.
With the state board approval, the consolidation agreement goes to a public vote inside the two districts sometime in May. The measure would require majority approval in both districts to be approved.
The new district would operate much as the two independent districts do now for a year before any changes are made.
