The Nemaha Valley school board met for the regular monthly meeting on Monday, March 8, 2010.  Approved on the Consent Agenda were the following items:  the February 8, 2010 minutes; semi-annual Site Council reports; approval of the 2010-11 calendar; acceptance of a public service grant in the amount of $3,532; authorization to hire temporary summer maintenance help; and approval to offer summer school classes. Also approved was a part-time contract for Mary Jane Fleming to teach two Spanish classes at the high school next school year.  Student groups were recognized for their recent accomplishments.  The middle school boys basketball team for placing first in the Oregon Trail League tournament; the Forensics team for placing first in the Big 7 League tournament; the high school boys basketball team for placing first in sub-state; and five seniors who were honored as the school’s top 10% academically at the annual Kansas Honors Program.

President Margie Heinen was authorized to sign the contract for sale of the property at 709 Nemaha to Nemaha County.  The board had accepted the county’s offer of $200,000 at the February meeting.  Mr. Harris was authorized to dispose of any remaining furnishings in the building in advance of the anticipated closing date of April 1.

An additional teacher inservice day was added at the end of the year. The final day for teachers will be May 28 with an inservice day on May 27. The final day for students will remain on Wednesday, May 26 with dismissal at 11:45.

Members accepted the lowest of four bids received to paint the main high school gym ceiling and upper walls.  The bids ranged from $13,469 to $33,485.  The low bid submitted by Neal Painting and Special Coatings from Topeka was approved.

Supt. Brian Harris was given the authority to seek bids on several facility improvement projects that will be occur during the summer months.  Included were lighting for the high school parking lot, stadium bleacher guards, shop garage doors, sealing of the high school parking lot, and replacement of a tractor and suburban. Bids will be presented for approval at a later meeting.

Board member representatives on the consolidation committee updated everyone on the latest discussion.  Members agreed that they want to keep USD 488 Axtell Bern Summerfield in the discussion as well as USD 451 B&B.  The board discussed whether a public meeting with Nemaha Valley patrons should be held and it was decided to wait on a response from the Axtell Bern Summerfield board as to whether they want to pursue consolidation discussion.

Also discussed were ways to manage the total budget to offset the decrease that is foreseen in the general fund budget.  Options will include increasing the Local Option Budget to take advantage of the new facilities weighting, providing carryover balances in special funds, utilizing remaining insurance settlement funds and using the construction fund balance to lower the mill levy required to pay down the school bonds and for some building-related expenses.

Two year contracts were renewed for Amy Beck, NVE&MS principal and Patrick McKernan, NVHS principal. A one-year contract was approved for Patrick Meier, Special Education Director.  Also approved was a two year contract for Clerk Colette Hermesch.
