Fort Hays State has its second indoor national champion in track and field in the last three years as senior Darcie Schmitz topped the field in the women’s long jump on Friday (Mar. 12). Schmitz set a new school record with a leap of 19-feet, 9.5-inches, beating second-place finisher
Racquel Anderson of Lincoln (Mo.) by a half inch. It was the third All-American honor for the Baileyville, Kan., native at Fort Hays State, after garnering two All-American honors during the outdoor season of 2009.
Schmitz entered the championships seventh on the national performance list heading into the championships. She was just behind teammate Kelsey Martin, who also competed in the event. Martin finished 13th with a jump of 17-feet, 6.25-inches.
Schmitz still has one event to go at the championships, as she will compete in the triple jump on Saturday. Morgan Witzel also will compete on Saturday in the high jump.
