Westar rate increase approved

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas regulators have approved a $17 million rate increase for the state‘s largest electric company.
The Kansas Corporation Commission said Thursday that residential customers of Westar Energy Inc. should see an average increase of $1 in their monthly bills, or 1.3 percent.
The increase is expected to take effect within a month.
The additional revenues will cover costs associated with wind farms in western Kansas and a natural-gas fired plant outside Emporia.
The commission also said it would immediately consolidate most rates between Westar‘s northern and southern divisions.
Westar formed from the merger of two separate utilities, and regulators had previously kept separate rates for its two divisions
