USD 488 Axtell Bern Summerfield Announce Re-Structuring Plan for 2010-2011 School Year

USD 488 Axtell Bern and Summerfield School District will make significant changes in the 2010-2011 school year to offset reductions in funding and declining enrollment.
• Beginning in the 2010-2011 School year, certified staff will be reduced by 4 positions.
• Schools will operate on a block schedule to allow teachers to travel between Axtell and Bern
• 5th and 6th Grades will be combined at the Bern Elementary Schools
• The school calendar will be compressed and the school day will be lengthened.
In addition, other staffing areas may also see a reduction in hours or the elimination of some positions. According to the Press Release issued by Bob Bartkowski, USD 488 Superintendent, the decisions concerning staff will be determined before the end of the present school year.
Three additional areas will be evaluated to decide if other restructuring moves should take place during the 2010-2011 school year. These include:
• The possibility of moving the 5th and 6th grades to Axtell
• Combining sport teams
• And combining the high school football program.
Superintendent Bartkowski also spoke with the Board of Education and some patrons regarding the importance of:
• Attracting additional families to the area,
• Increasing the foreign exchange student population across the district
• And, making sure families are aware of and complete the at-risk applications for additional funding.
