Local Reaction to President’s Afghan Speech

First District Kansas Congressman Jerry Moran has given Barack Obama a mixed review in regard to the President’s speech Tuesday evening about the War in Afghanistan.

Congressman Moran agrees with the need to send in more troops saying, “The mission in Afghanistan must succeed. It remains central to our county’s security that the Taliban and al-Qaeda terrorists be defeated.”

The Congressman disagrees however with the President setting a time table for withdrawal.

First Sergeant Tom Claussen, a retired member of the Army Reserve who lives east of Beloit, shares Moran’s approval of the President’s decision to send more troops to Afghanistan.

Claussen, who has served two tours of duty in the Middle East, said he has some real concerns about a time line.

The first troops headed for Afghanistan are expected to leave shortly. The entire contingent of troops should be in place by late spring or early summer 2010.

About Mike Schrant

Mike is one of those guys who has spent nearly a lifetime trying to figure out what he wants to do when he grows up. He has split time as a broadcaster and educator having first worked in radio in the early 1970’s while attending junior college. The two careers are directly connected because many of the 25 years as an educator were spent teaching broadcast journalism at the high school and college levels. Mike is married and has three adult children (no grandchildren yet) and enjoys sports, debating politics, gardening, landscaping-hauling rocks, and swapping stories with the "good old boys".
