Veterans Legislation

With Veteran’s Day just around the corner, the U.S. Congress is working on legislation that will improve work training opportunities for unemployed veterans.

First District Kansas Congressman Jerry Moran, a senior member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, has cast his vote to send H.R. 1168, the Veterans Retraining Act, out of committee and to the full House for a vote.

The Veterans Retraining Act authorizes a living stipend and moving assistance to unemployed veterans enrolled in a Department of Labor re-training program. Moran says, “This stipend would help unemployed veterans pay their bills so they can continue training in job skills relevant to today’s job market.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a record 990,000 veterans were out of work in September.

About Mike Schrant

Mike is one of those guys who has spent nearly a lifetime trying to figure out what he wants to do when he grows up. He has split time as a broadcaster and educator having first worked in radio in the early 1970’s while attending junior college. The two careers are directly connected because many of the 25 years as an educator were spent teaching broadcast journalism at the high school and college levels. Mike is married and has three adult children (no grandchildren yet) and enjoys sports, debating politics, gardening, landscaping-hauling rocks, and swapping stories with the "good old boys".
