Extension Programs On Going Green To Be Presented

On Tuesday, December 1, River Valley Extension FCS Agents Gina Aurand and Patricia Gerhardt will be presenting two programs focused on becoming more environmentally conscious. The first program will be in the River Valley Extension Meeting room in Clay Center (322 Grant Ave.) from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The afternoon program, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., will be in the First National Bank Meeting room in Washington.

Gina’s presentation “Green Choices for Your Table” will be the first presentation at each site. It will clarify what it means to be environmentally conscious in the kitchen. The program will discuss how the environment is influenced by our food choices – from shopping to preparation to clearing the table. Discussion will help participants consider how time and convenience also weigh into decision making. Participants will come away with a better understanding of the terms “organic, locavore, eco-friendly, sustainable, recyclable”, etc.

The second hour of the day’s programs, given by Patricia Gerhardt, will discuss our “throw away society” and how this behavior is filling up our landfills. Much of our everyday waste could be reduced if more people would take the time to rethink what they buy, reuse what they can and recycle what’s left. Practical suggestions and ideas will be shared to help households begin recycling.

For more information on either of these programs, contact your local River Valley Extension office in Belleville, Clay Center, Concordia or Washington.
