Frankfort Wins 1A State Volleyball Title

The Frankfort Lady Wildcats won their 2nd state volleyball championship in school history on Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum as they fought back from an early deficit in the semifinals and reeled off four straight games to win the state title.

Frankfort got to Saturday’s semifinals by way of a 2-1 pool play record on Friday in Hays. The Lady Wildcats opened pool play with a straight set win over Pratt-Skyline, winning the first game 25-16 and finishing off with a 25-17 win in game two.

In the second match of pool play, the Lady Wildcats disposed of Hoxie, but it did not come easy for Frankfort. Hoxie came out firing and Frankfort seemed out of sorts in game one, as Hoxie won 25-12. Frankfort recovered to win the next two games to improve to 2-0 in pool play. They Lady Wildcats won the second game 25-21, and came away 25-16 winners in the third.

The final match of pool play decided who would come out of the pool as the first place team, as Frankfort played top-seeded Hutchinson-Central Christian. The Wildcats took game one from Central Christian 25-21, but the Cougars came back to win the next two 25-18 and 26-24, respectively. Frankfort finished pool play with a 2-1 record and finished second in Pool I.

Also finishing 2-1 in pool play from the Twin Valley League were the Centralia Lady Panthers. Centralia opened pool play with a straight set loss to defending state champion St. John, 25-16 and 25-19. The Lady Panthers came back to win their next two matches, both in straight sets. They defeated Weskan 25-22 and 25-18, then won over Southern Coffey County 25-20 and 25-13.

In Saturday’s semifinals, Frankfort was faced with the task of the defending state champion St. John Lady Tigers, while Centralia drew Hutchinson-Central Christian.

Frankfort fell one game behind at the start to St. John as the Lady Tigers took the first game 25-20. The Wildcats did not let that deter them though as they came back to win the next two, both by scores of 25-21.

Centralia also picked up a victory in the semifinals, and also needed three games to do so. The Panthers won the first game 25-20, lost the second 17-25, and came back to win the deciding third game 25-19.

The wins set up an all Twin Valley League 1A State Championship match at Gross Memorial Coliseum. Frankfort used their momentum from the St. John match to win game one 25-16. The Wildcats controlled the first game most of the way. In game two, Frankfort got out early 3-0, then Centralia reeled off five straight points, and it was a see-saw battle most of the way early. Frankfort built a 18-13 lead, but Centralia came all the way back to tie it at 20. It was tied at 22 at one point and Frankfort won the final three points to win the game 25-22 and win their second state volleyball championship in school history, with other being in 1986 in Class 1A.

Centralia, who finished the season 41-7, also continued their run of great state finishes. It was their 16th state title match in the past 21 years, winning 10 titles and now 6 2nd place finishes. On the season, Centralia went 3-1 against Frankfort. In the end the only one that mattered was on Saturday, and Frankfort came away with the win, finishing the year with a 40-8 record and a 1A State Title.
