1A Schools Vote In Favor of Change

Back in late April and early May, the Kansas State High School Activities Association Board of Directors approved a proposal that would split class 1A into two championship Divisions for Basketball, Volleyball and Scholar’s Bowl. The final decision was left to the schools in class 1A in a majority vote.

The vote turned out in favor of the change, as 57 members schools supported the decision, 21 schools opposed the change and 23 other schools did not return their ballots. Even if the 23 that didn’t return the ballots would have all voted no, the change still would have passed with a majority vote.

The change will not take effect until the 2010-11 school year to ensure that the KSHSAA will have time to implement the necessary changes to go to the two division format for Class 1A. The format will be like that of 8-Man Football in the fall with the larger enrollment schools being in Division 1 and the smaller enrollments in Division 2. If there is an odd number of schools, Division 1 would have the extra school added.
